Lewis Smith Dam is up for relicensing in 2007. The original license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission was for 50 years which began in 1957 when construction began. During that time many issues have been identified and laws passed such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. In order to address the many issues, Alabama Power has been holding stakeholder meetings for the last five years and Deb Berry, SLEPC President, has been the SLEPC representative attending these meetings. The new license is being submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the summer of 2005 for approval. Issue Action Groups were formed to address the issues that were identified by the stakeholders such as Recreation (new recreational facilities), Public Safety, Lake Level Fluctuations, Downstream Flows, etc. If you have questions contact Deb Berry (205)823-0015.
